Both models deliver nimble handling dynamics and the surefooted control of standard all-wheel drive.

The BMW X1 introduced a new M35i model for 2024, featuring a higher-tuned turbo-four with 312 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. However, it's less exciting and far less efficient than the Volvo XC40's all-electric Recharge variant (see below).

For the 2024 model year, Volvo has added a new RWD single-motor variant (248 hp, 310 lb-ft; 82-kWh battery) with increased range (EPA-estimated 293 miles). The BMW X1 doesn't offer an electrified version.

Both models provide impressively roomy accommodations for their size. They also boast more towing capability than class competitors (XC40: 3,500 pounds, X1: 3,700 pounds). However, the Volvo XC40 offers more utility thanks to a spacious storage area measuring 57.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The BMW X1's max cargo capacity is 46.9 cubic feet behind the first row.

2024 Volvo XC40 vs. BMW X1: Features
