As the automaker's flagship SUV, The Volvo XC90 combines timeless and assertive style, upscale accommodations, and robust performance under the hood. It exemplifies Volvo's signature Scandinavian craftsmanship and design, expertly blending advanced technology with a clean, minimalist-inspired interior. In the fast-advancing luxury SUV class, the XC90 has carved out a niche at the top of the segment. While other brands prioritize showiness and glitz, Volvo's largest SUV takes a more understated approach. Exuding sophistication while delivering a premium luxury experience, the XC90 compares favorably to its many class competitors, particularly the Lexus RX 350. While RX 350 has strengths, a head-to-head comparison with its Volvo counterpart reveals a few shortcomings.

When put to the test by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), Volvo achieved a superior result. Thanks to Volvo's advanced Safety Cage construction and use of high-strength steel, the XC90 earned five out of five stars for Driver and Passenger-side collision protection and five stars overall. The Lexus RX 350 came up short by one star on both frontal evaluations, earning a four-star overall rating from the NHTSA.

Admirably, the Lexus RX 350 comes standard the Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 suite of advanced driver aids. Still, Volvo XC90's standard IntelliSafe driver-assistance package is more complete and more advanced. Regardless of trim level, All Volvo XC90's come with:

  • Pilot Assist partially autonomous (Level 2) driving with Adaptive Cruise Control
  • City Safety Collision Avoidance (forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking)
  • Lane Keeping Aid
  • Road Sign Information
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Run-off Road Mitigation
