The numerous shoppers looking for a three-row luxury SUV to accommodate their family will no doubt take notice of the 2018 Volvo XC90. As if its status as the most awarded premium utility this side of the new millennium wasn’t enough, the SUV flagship has built on the brand’s reputation for safety and family function by redefining what luxury means for the Swedish automaker.
We hope you’re ready to revise your expectations upwards. Although the 2018 XC90’s stately exterior makes for an excellent first impression, it’s the interior treatments that routinely bowl over our Philadelphia, Langhorne, and Bensalem customers. Imagined by designer Thomas Ingenlath, all four trims of this flagship utility feature quality leathers and inlays of aluminum or wood, arranged with clean, uncluttered lines and simple, flowing shapes. Drawn from Scandinavian tradition, this sense of time-tested craft is offset by an arsenal of technology, ranging from the standard Sensus Connect interface to an available graphical heads-up display.
Gorgeous as the interior of the XC90 is, it’s also functional. All three rows are spacious, with up to 85 cubic feet of cargo volume with both rows folded.
The 2018 XC90 comes standard with FWD on T5 models, with 250 horsepower, 258 lb-ft of torque, and optional AWD. Upgrade to the T6 engine option, and you may find yourself checking the spec sheet. Where the 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque it affords seems V6-like, the engine has four cylinders with turbocharging and supercharging to put down power. This engine also is part of the T8 Plug-in Hybrid offering, which adds on an electric motor for 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque.
But as we mentioned earlier on, Volvo’s reputation for putting safety front-and-center only grows in the XC90. The semi-autonomous Pilot Assist II system is standard across the range, along with blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking, and of course, a rear view camera with parking sensors for easy maneuvering in tight confines. Further up the range sees an available 360 degree camera, head-up display, and more.
As many standard features as you’ll find on this Swede slice of utility, the options sheet holds many desirable additions. We recommend equipping the Four-Corner Air Suspension, which lets the driver raise and lower the ride height to ease loading and unloading, while providing additional comfort and automatic leveling on the road in the interest of efficiency.
